High School Media Center

Through my internship with HNI Workplace Furnishings, I have been working with the Dallas Independent School District and Honore Office Products to design over fifty school libraries functioning as media centers with HON furniture, including Spruce High School.
The design for this media center is based on the acronym R.E.A.D. (Research, Exploration,
Application, Design). Research focuses on quiet areas for individual study and exploration for team collaboration, Application areas are used for media streaming, broadcasting, and esports, while the design space is for 3D printing and robotics. These design criteria helped organize the space into different function to break up the large open floor plan.
As the finishes and furniture were chosen by the end user, this project was mostly space planning. One area that was difficult was the smaller workroom to the left of the large space. As both doors open into the middle of the room, it was difficult to fit furniture in here that would allow for enough walking space. My solution was to incorporate moveable and soft seating, such as poufs, with small side tables as workspaces. This allowed for the tight space to be utilized efficiently.
